    Niujie Mosque

The Niujie Mosque is located on Niujie Street inside Guang’anmen in Beijing. It is the largest and oldest mosque in the city.

Built in 996 during the Liao Dynasty (916-1125), Niujie Mosque comprises a hall, the Bangge Building, the Wangyue Building and the stele pavilion. The hall’s wall is adorned with Arabic character carvings and various flower patterns. Color drawings on the fascia and the ceiling give the hall its
    unique splendor.

Shaped like a square pavilion, the Bangge Building, which stands in front of the hall, has a double-eaved gable and hip roof. From the building, a priest reminds churchgoers of the time.

The Wangyue Building is hexagonal in shape and has a double-eaved, pyramidal roof with decorations rich in Islamic colors. Two stone tablets with Arabic inscriptions and a bronze censer weighing 900 kilograms are kept in the mosque. Such cultural relics date back to the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing
    (1644-1911) Dynasties.

The Niujie Mosque is the site of the China Islamic Association.

    Yelikewen Religion

Yelikewen was what the Mongolian rulers of the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368) called Christianity. Since Nestorianism suffered the destructive blow in China, there were only some Christians in China’s northwestern frontier. In some Mongolian tribes, there were quite a few people who believed in
    Nestorianism.

With their strong military force, the Mongolians created an empire covering most of Eurasia. They conquered many peoples and as a result some peoples who believed in Nestorianism migrated to Chinese inland areas. At the same time, Roman Catholicism was introduced into China from Europe. In 1294,
Giovanni da Montecorvino, a Franciscan of Roman Catholicism got to the capital of the Yuan Dynasty, which is today’s Beijing, and set up a church there.

Yelikewen included both Nestorianism and Catholicism. According to certain historical documents, there were 30,000 Christians in China at that time. The central government set up an institution calledChongfu Templein charge of Yelikewen. Christians in the Yuan Dynasty were mainly from some non-Han
nationalities in northwestern China. When the Yuan Dynasty was thrown off by the uprising of the Han people in 1368, the Christians had to flee back to some remote regions or return to their motherlands, because the new emperor did not like the religion. Christianity disappeared in China again.
The situation lasted more than 200 years till 1582.

    Wanghai Lou Church in Tianjin

For historical reasons, there are many famous Catholic churches in Tianjin City, among which is the Wanghai Lou Church.

The church, also called Catholic Meeting Hall or Victory Mary Church, established by French Catholics at Sanchakou outside the foreign settlement in June 1869. It is a large brick-and-wood architecture of 10 meters high, 30 meters long and 10 meters wide. It is a rectangle in layout. Most
buildings except for the tower are two-storeyed with cyan-brick walls, pointedly arched doors and windows, and buttresses on both sides of the entrance. There are three corridors inside, and they follow Basilica style with a higher central corridor and lower side corridors. The tower is
flat-roofed. Later small penthouses were built at four corners of the chapel. The church is a good example of the Gothic architecture.

For some reasons, the church was completely destroyed later. It was rebuilt in 1897 at the same place and burnt down later. The existing building was rebuilt in 1903 and renovated after the earthquake in 1976. However, the appearance of the church did not changed much even after several
    reconstructions.
